Environmental Agency Activates Emergency Response Operations at Bantargebang Landfill

The Jakarta Environmental Agency reacted quickly to activate Emergency Response Operations following the landslide that occurred in the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) area, Sunday (3/8).

The main priority is the safety of officers

Head of Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto said his party immediately deployed a team and coordinated joint handling operations across agencies since the incident report was received,

The joint team involved included the 7/155th GS Armed Battalion of the Jaya Military Command, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Bekasi City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Bekasi City Fire Department, the Bantargebang Police, and the 05/Bantargebang Military District Command (Koramil 05). Asep led the emergency response operation at the scene.

"The main priority is the safety of officers, handling of victims, and accelerating the evacuation of vehicles buried by landslides," he said.

Based on temporary data, the landslide at the Bantargebang landfill caused four people to die, namely Sumine (60), the owner of a shop near the location; Dedi Sutrisno and Irwan Supriyatin, garbage truck drivers; and Endah Widayanti (25) who works as a scavenger.

In addition, a truck driver from the South Jakarta Environment Sub-agency, Slamet, suffered minor injuries and was immediately evacuated to receive medical treatment at the nearest health facility, and has now been allowed to go home.

He explained that during the evacuation operation, five of the seven trucks affected by the landslide were successfully evacuated. The other two trucks, driven by Riki Supriyadi of the North Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency and Irwan Supriyatin, are still underway.

"All PJLPs who die will receive compensation in the form of BPJS Employment, while medical expenses for victims who suffer injuries will be covered by the Regional Government, and social assistance will be provided to other affected victims, including shop owners and scavengers who do not have PJLP status," he explained.

To support the operation, the Jakarta Environmental Agency and a joint team deployed 13 excavators and two ambulances, supported by the Bekasi City Government, to work simultaneously to clear the landslide material to expedite the evacuation process.

Area stabilization measures were also immediately implemented to prevent potential further landslides. He explained that the arrangement and reinforcement of the embankment zone are being carried out in stages to ensure the embankment structure is stable and safe for field operations.

"Safety in operating waste services at the Bantargebang landfill is a top priority," he added.

The Jakarta Environmental Agency also ensures that public waste management services remain run while the handling process is ongoing. One temporary disposal point at the Bantargebang landfill is open at night to ensure the smooth flow of garbage trucks from Jakarta. The other two disposal points are currently under renovation.

"Currently, we are asking the ranks of the Environmental Sub-agencies to postpone sending waste to the Bantargebang landfill until the evacuation is complete," he continued.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to handling this situation quickly, carefully, and in a coordinated manner. The primary focus is on safety, victim care, and ensuring the swift and safe recovery of Jakarta's waste management operations.
